El proyecto de investigación en el que he estado trabajando en la Facultad de Medicina (FM) de la UNAM se refiere a la caracterización funcional de la NADPH oxidasa de hepatocitos de rata. En el laboratorio hemos encontrado en hepatocitos de rata, la actividad de una NADPH oxidasa. Esta actividad es inhibida por anticuerpos específicos contra la NOX-2. La activación de esta NOX-2 por epinefrina se lleva a cabo a través de los receptores alfa-adrenérgicos. Sin embargo, esta activación es inhibida por los receptores beta-adrenérgicos. Debido a que los receptores adrenérgicos participan en vías metabólicas como gluconeogénesis, glucogenólisis y ureagenesis en el hepatocito, nos interesa estudiar el papel de la NADPH oxidasa en la regulación de estas vías.
También estamos interesados en el laboratorio en estudiar la participación de la adenosina en la fisiopatogenia del síndrome metabólico. El síndrome metabólico un problema de salud en México y afecta a una proporción importante de la población mundial. A pesar de la gran cantidad de literatura sobre el tema, persiste el debate sobre su fisiopatología, por lo que estamos analizando si los productos del catabolismo del ATP, producidos por un exceso en el consumo de la fructosa, participan en la patogénesis del síndrome metabólico
