El Dr. Federico Martínez Montes es médico cirujano por la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM. Realizo la maestría y el doctorado en ciencias biomédicas en la UNAM. Es Profesor Titular «C» de TC en la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM, pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Investigadores y a la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias; recibió el Reconocimiento Catedrático de la UNAM y actualmente es PRIDE D. Obtuvo la Cátedra Extraordinaria “Salvador Zubirán Anchondo” de la Facultad de Medicina. Recibió el Premio GlaxoSmithKline en investigación básica, tercer lugar en el 2006. Ocupó puestos directivos en la Sociedad Mexicana de Bioquímica, A.C. de la que fue su presidente en el bienio 2007-2009 y Consejero de Ciencias Básicas de la Academia de Investigación en Biología de la Reproducción, A.C. en varias ocasiones. Ha participado como revisor invitado de varias revistas internacionales. Fue becario de la Ford Foundation y de la Rockefeller Foundation para estudios de colaboración en el área de bioquímica reproductiva. Fue sido Consejero Técnico de la Facultad de Medicina; Miembro del Comité Académico del Programa de Doctorado en Ciencias Biomédicas y Miembro del Comité Académico de la Licenciatura en Investigación Biomédica Básica de la Facultad de Medicina, miembro de la Comisión de Investigación y Ética de la Facultad de Medicina, de la Comisión PRIDE y de la Comisión Dictaminadora de Ciencias Básicas de la Facultad de Veterinaria y Zootecnia; del Comité de Evaluación de Proyectos PAPIIT de la UNAM y del Grupo de Evaluación del Posgrado en el Foro Consultivo Científico y Tecnológico y revisor de proyectos y cátedras del CONACyT. Fue Coordinador del Doctorado en Ciencias Biomédicas, UNAM y Subdirector de Evaluación del Posgrado de la UNAM. Desarrolló varios programas interactivos de apoyo a la docencia y es editor del libro de Bioquímica de Laguna. Ha publicado más de 60 artículos internacionales y cuenta con varios capítulos en libros. Ha graduado alumnos tanto a nivel licenciatura como a nivel posgrado. Actualmente es Miembro del Comité Académico de la Unidad de Biomedicina de la FES-Iztacala y estuvo al como Jefe del Departamento de Bioquímica de la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM hasta 2025. Su área de investigación está relacionada con el mecanismo de control de la esteroidogénesis en la placenta humana.

Experiencia Profesional

Investigación de interés

En el laboratorio se estudia el metabolismo de las mitocondrias de la placenta humana, tanto desde el punto de vista bioenergético como del esteroidogénico. Las mitocondrias de los tejidos esteroidogénicos, además de proporcionar la energía que requiere las células en forma de ATP, transforman el colesterol en pregnenolona como precursor de las demás hormonas esteroides. A diferencia del resto de los tejidos que sintetizan hormonas esteroides, en la placenta humana no se han descrito los factores y/o rutas que modulen la síntesis de ATP y la producción de progesterona. Actualmente estamos estudiando las proteínas que participan de la cascada de señalización para la formación de progesterona, la fosforilación de proteínas y su repercusión en la síntesis de ATP. Igualmente, se está tratando de identificar las proteínas que transportan el colesterol del citoplasma a las mitocondrias, una vez que el colesterol materno llega a la placenta.
