En el laboratorio se estudia el metabolismo de las mitocondrias de la placenta humana, tanto desde el punto de vista bioenergético como del esteroidogénico. Las mitocondrias de los tejidos esteroidogénicos, además de proporcionar la energía que requiere las células en forma de ATP, transforman el colesterol en pregnenolona como precursor de las demás hormonas esteroides. A diferencia del resto de los tejidos que sintetizan hormonas esteroides, en la placenta humana no se han descrito los factores y/o rutas que modulen la síntesis de ATP y la producción de progesterona. Actualmente estamos estudiando las proteínas que participan de la cascada de señalización para la formación de progesterona, la fosforilación de proteínas y su repercusión en la síntesis de ATP. Igualmente, se está tratando de identificar las proteínas que transportan el colesterol del citoplasma a las mitocondrias, una vez que el colesterol materno llega a la placenta.
